Looking for IOS c2900xl-h2s-mz-112.8.1-SA6.bin?

Level 1

I''m trying to set up some VLAN's on an older WS-2924C-XL-A switch (trunking it with a newer 3750 core distribution switch).

Currently running the image:  c2900xl-h2-mz-112.8.1.SA6.bin      best I can determine looking at this version's release notes,

The Enterprise Edition release "c2900xl-h2s-mz-112.8.1-SA6.bin provides support for this capability, but I can't locate it anywhere

on Cisco's TAC web site.  Can anyone 1) Confirm this release will do what I need.   2) know where to locate/download it.

Not really concern about the level of support, just need to get it working.   I realize we may need to crack open our wallets here and

just replace the darn thing...

Any help would be appreciated!

Joe

Here ya go , there is even some newer 12.X code for that seeing that you have a 8 meg box.  What you need is on the main cisco download page , must not have the correct  permissions .   Use the 12.X  code for your install , not the last 12.X release they made but its a lot newer than 11.X .

VLANs and trunking should aready be supported on your current image.  The technique for adding a VLAN is slightly different from modern switches:

vlan database

  vlan 3 name VLAN003

  exit

You should also be aware that the old XL supported both encapsulations: dot1q and isl.  (Some very old images might support only ISL, but I think yours is OK.)  You therefore have to specify the switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q before you put the port into trunk mode.

Ok.  Thanks for the info. What I've downloaded is c2900xl-c3hs-m.120-5.WC10.bin

Can I simply apply this using CNA 5.5 tool I'm now beginning to use to manage our cisco LAN switching environment?

Glen,

I  finally got around this weekend to updating 3 of our older 2924XL switches from 11.2 release to the 12.0.

I'm all set to go thanks to you!

The one mistake I made after transfering the .bin file to the local flash: drive was leaving off the "flash:" reference in my "set boot" command under "Config T".   When the switch rebooted, it was thrown into a local "switch:" prompt with an error that boot process failed.   After I realized from

the console in could locally boot using:     boot flash:c2900XLX-c3h2s-mz-120-5.3.WC.1.bin

It occured to me the "flash:" referene was missing.   So the next switch, I updated I used the following steps and it worked like a champ.

So the general steps were:

copy tftp:  flash:

specify... IP address of tftp server

specify... source file name

specify... destination file name

dir flash:        show display the IOS images on the local switch

config t

set boot flash:c2900XL-c3h2s-mz-120-5.3.WC.1.bin

ctrl-z

write mem

reload

What's interesting is I couldn't browse the Cisco software download section to find this older .bin file?

These switches are no longer under support, but why would Cisco hide these images from their customers...

Thanks again,

Joe

How Glen found out about this FTP site is a wonder indeed.  And because it's not for general circulation you noticed that the directory is not really up-to-date.  You can still find the IOS for 1900, 2900XL/3500XL in the Cisco Download Centre.  The latest (and last) version for the 2900XL/3500XL is WC17.

Because the 2900XL has a very tiny flash, you don't need to specify the boot string.  The 2900XL can take only one IOS.
