PIM BIDIR & PIM SM

I have an Edge router which has a PIM SM domain

on the LAN interface and PIM BIDIR on teh WAN interface.

I need to be able to pass the multicast packets from one domain to the other.

Is there any way to do that?

Hello,

my understanding is that a multicast group is treated as PIM SM or PIM BIDIR on the basis of the multicast group address, incoming  interface does not play a role in this.

The router can have a range of multicast IP addresses treated as bidirectional other as SSM other as PIM SM.

so I think it is not possible in the terms you are describing, it may be possible between two different multicast domains using MSDP between edge devices.

on a single device all you can do to emulate multiple devices is to use VRFs and multicast VPN and a physical link between one port in GRT and one in VRF where they speak MSDP.

But it is something that is should be tested and using a VRF may impact on unicast traffic.

Hope to help

Giuseppe
