Hi,

Vlan 70 and vlan 83 exist on 6513 floor switch 1 . This floor switch is tied to core switch 2. I have attached a Diagram of the scenario.

SVI for vlan 70 and 83 sit on Core 1.

My workstation is on vlan 70 and when i do a ping to a workstaion on vlan 83 it works but when i do a trace to the  same desktop on vlan 83 it stops on Core 1  and i dont see the trace going to hte workstation

Can anybody explain why this is hapenning.

Thanks

Do you have no ip unreachables enabled on any of the SVIs?

Hi Ediison,

"No IP unreachables " is not enabled on any of the SVI's

Thanks

Hi,

any personal Fw involved on the PCs?

BR,

Milan

Hi

I can ping the Workstation but trace doesn't work

i have question aren't ping and trace both the same (ICMP)

Hi,

ping is working with ICMP and trace is working with UDP packets.

can you check is there any desktop firewall in your both workstations.

regards

karuppu

Hi,

Cisco trace is using UDP but Microsoft tracert is using ICMP.

The difference between Ping and traceroute then is the traceroute works with TTL - it sends packets with TTL=1, 2, 3,...

And the routers on the path are replying with ICMP "TTL expired" responses.

The target device should respond with a different ICMP message (Host unreachable, I think) though.

Milan

Hi,

you mean if i can ping the workstation the firewall is stopping trace packets (UDP)

Is this possible?
