Solved: Remote cisco IOS Image upgrade issues

Hi guys,

I want to upgrade the image of the Cisco 2800 series router. Unfortunately, i have to do this remotely as this router is not hosted in my place.

When i tried to copy the new IOS image to the flash, i got the message saying "Not enough memory space in the flash". The only way i have to do this is to delete the old image and copy the new image; then reboot the router with new image.

Since i have to do this remotely, i am really concern about the router down time. Do i have to make any special considerations when i do this?

When the old image is deleted, will it still allow me to connect to the router to do the new image upgrade?
Once the image is upgraded, will it boot into normal mode or ROMMON mode?
Once the image is rebooted, will the old configuration will be still intact? or do i have to reload the config again?

Yes as the ios is loaded from flash into RAM on bootup so deleting the IOS from flash will not cause any issues.

Once the image is upgraded, will it boot into normal mode or ROMMON mode?

Depends on the config-register setting - post this (show version)

Once the image is rebooted, will the old configuration will be still intact? or do i have to reload the config again?

After you erase the flash and copy the new IOS you will need to to a copy run start to write the config to flash again. If you don't do this you will lose the config.

Hi,

I did as i said, everythign works fine. But, i had two additional interfaces on the router. They are not detected in teh new image.

But, if i put the image back t the original, both the interfaces are detected. Why is that..?

How can i rectify this..?

Hi

I am using Cisco 2811 Router. Initially it had c2800nm-ipbasek9-mz.124-11.XJ4.bin. I upgrad it to c2800nm-adventerprisek9-mz.124-25b.bin.

By default the router had two fast eather interfaces. But for our requirement, we have added two additional Fast Ethernet interfaces (Fe0/0/0 and Fe0/2/0).

Both both additional fast ethernet interfaces are not detected with the new Image.

What should i do to get this interfaces on the new image.

Hi, I dont have any part numbers of the interfaces with me right away.

Is this issue is because of the new IOS image doesnt recognise additional interfaces..? or something else..?

The main reason i want to upgrade the IOS is to implement IPSec VPNs.

If you post the output of show diag and show inventory, we should be able to figure out the model number. It is possible that the modules need special software.

If you CF doesn't have enough space, why don't you get a bigger one (maximum size 2Gb)?
Can you send a USB stick to the router? If you can, load the IOS into the USB or CF and send it across.

If you are using either the HWIC-1FE or HWIC-2FE, you need to use the IOS with the "T" train.

lealaohoo, I have managed to upgrade the new image w/o deleting the old image to the CF. I just move few GUI files (*.tar files) out of the flash.

So i have the both old and new IOS in the router as per now.

According to the data sheet you need IOS starting from 12.4(15)T will support the HWIC-1FE.
