Hi Manu

Need some more information .

Are you running any routing protocol over these link or not .I mean to say you are  using these links  as layer 2 or layer 3 connectivity.

Accordingly we can configure these link in layer 2 or layer 3 etherchannels.

Ajay Kumar

Its used for layer 3 Connectivity...

Manu

Following is the link configuring Layer 2 / Layer 3 etherchannels

One quick Qn.. Ether Channel should be configured both the ends right?? But No access to ISP side!!

Manu,

Will the ISP allow aggregation at their end ?

If yes, go for LACP ! This can be done at L2 or L3

If you run some IGP like Ospf, it can do the load balancing at Layer 3

If its all Cisco network, you can even exploit the CEF with per-destination/per-packet load balancing without trying for any aggregation too.

HTH,

Tharak

1. ISP not allowing to create etherchannel at their end.. (here its atleast one ISP, if it is two ISP.. we cant even think of this)

2. So far no routing protocol is used, all default routes..

3. Our ultimate aim is to have 4Mb bandwidth (there is another loadbalancer sitting behind this router)

firewall1----->loadbalancer1------->router1---------->ISP1

firewall2----->loadbalancer2------->router2---------->ISP2

in this ISP already given a 4Mb link..

unfortunately the second ISP gave 2 *2Mb link..

Well we can rule out link aggregation over here in this case.

The only option is loadbalance at Layer 3.

I dont know exaclty how the performance will differ, but not too much.

I think you should ask your ISP to provide single 4 MB ethernet line instead of two 2 MBs. This will be beneficial for you. Otherwise, In my views, only load balancing is possible.
