Issue with Cisco Switch 2960G

net buzz

Hi!

I have just purchased four cisco WS-C2960G-24TC-L switches with 4 SFP GLC-LH-SM= modules. All of the switches are having the c2960-lanbasek9-mz.122-44.SE6.bin as IOS.

The issue I am having is that when I plug the SFP modules, they appear to be not recognised by the switch.

When I am doing a Show version, the number of ports recognised are 24.

Please see attached the sh version output.

Will am IOS upgrade solve the issue?

Thanks and regards,

Alvin

Hi Alvin,

WS-C2960G-24TC-L - will support 20 Ethernet 10/100/1000 ports and 4 dual-purpose uplinks (each dual-purpose uplink port has one 10/100/1000 Ethernet port and 1 SFP-based Gigabit Ethernet port, 1 port active), 1 RU fixed-configuration and  LAN Base Image installed.

so at a time you can have a single port can be used in one of the four ports, check out the below link for further information.

Hi,

In WS-C2960G-24TC-L, 20 Ethernet 10/100/1000 ports and 4 dual-purpose uplinks ,each dual-purpose uplink port has one 10/100/1000 Ethernet port and 1 SFP-based Gigabit Ethernet port, at a time only 1 port active(either it may be SFP or Ethernet).

so  the switch will display only 24 port active in sh version

Will am IOS upgrade solve the issue?   -- No need. Because it is the default behaviour of the switch

Hello Alvin,

documentation says that it is supported since

12.2(25)FX

http://www.cisco.com/en/US//docs/interfaces_modules/transceiver_modules/compatibility/matrix/OL_6981.html

you may need to set the media-type to sfp in interface configuration mode to say to the switch to use the SFP

media-type {auto-select | rj45 | sfp}

see

http://www.cisco.com/en/US//docs/switches/lan/catalyst2960/software/release/12.2_44_se/configuration/guide/swint.html#wp1831207

Hope to help
