Solved: Vmware 5.13f to 713b

We’re running 5.13f in production and have an upgrade to 7.13b got through the PUT. When I try to run the upgrade in vmware it fails, I have plenty of resource 2gb for ram and 72gb drive. I get the following upgrade errors at the end of the install but the upgrade is unhappy about vmware through the whole process Manager||Method: getValidateErrorFile args: |- current mode=UNKNOWN completed with code [0]| 03/04/2010 17:26:26 upgrade_os.sh|This hardware is no longer supported. Validation error on HSSI mode: VMware Virtual Machine Validation Failure: Unable to validate VMware based server disk settings. Please check SCSI disks are at least 72 GB in size and are located at 0:0 (and 0:1 in a two disk config) in machine settings..| 03/04/2010 17:26:26 upgrade_manager.sh|Platform upgrade failed| I looked to see if there are explicit settings for drive size that I would put in the vmx file but couldn’t find any. I’ve tried it with an 80gb drive. I want to test out cucimoc. Any ideas would be welcomed.

I see. ESX version might be your problem.

The reason is:

In CUCM 5.1.3, there's no code to detect VMWare. i.e. If you install 5.1.3 on VMWare, it'll just treat it like a regular (physical) PC. It'll succeed as long as the VM has enough memory and hard drive space.

On CUCM 7.1.3, things changed. Cisco put in the code to detect VMWare. If the VMWare version/edition does not meet Cisco's requirement, the installation will fail.

1) What VMWare you're running? Workstaion or ESX?

2) Was CM 5.1.3f on VMWare?

Just for your information:

1) VMWare is not supported until CUCM 8.0.2

2) The only supported VMWare edition is ESXi 4.

I'm running ESX 3.0.1, I started with UCM 5.11a then upgraded to 5.13f then used the PUT upgrade kit to 7.13b, thats when the wheels fell off.. This is the first time I couldn't install, I understand that the VM environment isn't supported, I think I can get some room on one of our ESX4 hosts if thats the only place the upgrade will work, I didn't see version 8 in my PUT.

I found an interesting blog that has me changing the OS to recognize vmware as an appliance. Unfortunately the suggested change in the settings are not the same in my 5.13f installation. http://www.markholloway.com/blog/?p=543

What the blog (http://www.markholloway.com/blog/?p=543) talking is the "acknowledgement" screen after installation. Cisco get rid of this screen in later versions of CUCM and CUPS (and other VOS based products).

The above does not apply to your scenario, which was failing on the validation check during installation/upgrade.
