When you sync up to AD, you define an LDAP attribute to map to your userid attribute in CCM - one of sAMAccountName, telephoneNumber, employeeNumber and a couple of others...

If your usernames in CCM match a username that is synced in from AD, then the details of that account stay and are linked to the AD account that was synced in.

If no match is found, the account in CCM is marked for deletion. You then need to correct the associated AD account (or create one for it) to prevent it being aged out.
