Problems with fax connected to UC540

Hi there,

We are using a UC540 with 4x ISDN BRI lines. In the past we also used a seperate analog line for our fax. Recently we have conected our fax server to one of the analog ports on the UC540. Since then we have problems with incoming faxes. Untill now three different types of error messages with incoming faxes, see below for samples:

- "Reception error" "The remote fax machine did not respond in time, and the call was terminated." "0x40000802"
- "Reception error" "The incoming call cannot be answered as a fax call." "0x40000801"

- "Reception error" "Fax Reception error" "0x0000000c"

Incoming faxes are received via a fax modem connected to a Microsoft SBS2003 server. These errors did not occur while connected to the seperate analog line without interference of the UC540.

Is there a way to tune the UC540 so incoming faxes will be received correctly?

Oscar,

Make sure that your BRI lines are showing no errors and running clean. This should work without additional configuration, since for POTS to POTS fax ,he DSP's handle the passthrough by default.

Thanks! In fact I am kind of a newbee with the UC540. I have tried to find a 'how to' article on the web, but could not find any. Can you guide me a bit on how to check / debug my BRI lines??

A "show interface BRI X/X/X" will display the required information.

It showed me this: (I have filtered only records containing errors)

BRI0/1/0 is up, line protocol is up (spoofing)
8 input errors, 8 CRC, 0 frame, 0 overrun, 0 ignored, 8 abort

BRI0/1/1 is up, line protocol is up (spoofing)
4 input errors, 4 CRC, 0 frame, 0 overrun, 0 ignored, 4 abort

BRI0/2/0 is up, line protocol is up (spoofing)
6 input errors, 5 CRC, 0 frame, 0 overrun, 0 ignored, 6 abort

BRI0/2/1 is up, line protocol is up (spoofing)
3 input errors, 2 CRC, 0 frame, 0 overrun, 0 ignored, 3 abort

What does this tell me? What can I do about it?

Did you configure this system with CCA?

Yep, this UC540 has been configured using the CCA only.

In that case, the timing and synchronization configuration should be correct. I would check with your Telco to make sure they are running clean on their side. I would also check the cables. Finally, check that the FXS port is configured in CCA for "Fax" and not "User". If none of this helps, you should open a TAC case so we can look into this further.

Can someone please post on how to get the fax to email thing working without a SMTP server or with a SMTP server located locally on a machine. Basically we don't have an exchange server or a dedicated a SMTP server. I want to know how to get this faxt to email working using a UC-540.

You would then use the SMTP server of your email provider.

Are you the end user? If yes, can you get some reputable consultant or UC certfied cisco partner to help you?

Otherwise it's likely you will accumualtre frustration and no results in trying to do yourself.

Some amount of errors on BRI interface is normal, and not a concern at all.
