Hi all, I previously opened a topic about my pain with my IDS, but this is an off topic question, so I post here, but I'll let the mods moving if needed. Well, I was wondering if a hard drive is required to run the IDS 4215 ? I got everything booting up, but then my analysis engine, after going high on CPU crashed. The IDS I got has no hard drive, so I was wondering if someone would have ran an IDS 4215 with no hard drive, or can this be my cause of failure ?
Thanks.

Yes, you would need to have hard drive on IDS 4215.
It is also specified in the documentation that you would need to:
Only use the replacement IDE hard-disk drive from Cisco. We cannot guarantee that other hard-disk drives will operate properly with the IPS.<\quote>
Here is the URL for your reference:

Ok, I'll try to get some old IDE drives to plug into and try. That could explain my errors... I'll update my case on this thread.

Ok, I guess I need a 2"5 as there's no power alim to the hard drive... Does anyone ever tried replacing the hard drive ? If so, what was the brand ?
thanks

Hi Bastien,
As stated in the post earlier, you would need to purchase the Hard Drive from Cisco:
Only use the replacement IDE hard-disk drive from Cisco. We cannot guarantee that other hard-disk drives will operate properly with the IPS.<\quote>

Yes, but I didn't see any part number for a spare hard drive, and I got my IDS 200$ on ebay, It's for working on my certs, and I guess cisco's spare hard drive will be incredibely expensive ... I guess it's nothing more than a 2"5 IDE drive ? that's the same thing with SFP modules, you can use non cisco and it works good... So I guess cisco is not a hard drive manufacturer so they would use a standard hard drive ...
Thanks

Please also be advised that 4215 is EOL as per the following notice:
Even if you are able to get it working, you would still need to purchase the IPS subscription otherwise, you can't update the signature file, and the last day for any signature update for the 4215 is July 29, 2011

yes, but again, I do not really care about having signature up to date, I just want to test some features to work my IPS certification (CCSP track), I won't use it in a production network.

Ok that makes sense.

I'm in the same boat. Does anyone have an IDS 4215 that could open it up and look -- maybe even take a photo? There has to be a 3rd party hard drive that will work.

I have bought an Used 2"5 hardrive on ebay, Hope that'll work.

Let us know if it works.

Edit: My CPU gone to normal after 10 minutes
IDM is also working, so my woes was definitively related to the hard drive !
Thanks guys for the support
