I ran some performance tests and thought everyone might be interested in the results. I have a new version 2 unit flashed with the latest firmware - 184.108.40.206. It's plugged into a Cisco SLM2024 switch. Both devices are set for auto-negotiation and the current link speed is 1 Gbps, It's 10:30 p.m. on a week day. The kids are asleep so network activity should be minimal. Most of my neighbors with wireless networks are probably in bed.
Laptop is a Dell M4000 running Windows 7 64-bit Enterprise w/8GB RAM. Network card is Intel 5100 AGN and supports 802.11a/g/n. I think it's built-in to the motherboard but I haven't checked.
2nd floor (upstairs) - The wireless laptop
1st floor (kitchen pantry closet) - Cisco AP-1131AG dual-radio. Supports 802.11a/g, It's plugged into my Cisco ASA5505 firewall but it should not be a bottleneck. The ASA has only 100MB ports.
Basement - Cisco WAP4410N plugged into my Cisco SLM2024.
Test server - Windows 2003 Standard connected to Cisco SLM2024 switch. Test server and laptop are running PassMark PerformanceTest software. Windows 2003 server in server test mode, laptop in client test mode.
Encryption - WPA2 Personal AES. 802.11a and n networks have same 32-bit randomly generated encryption key. 802.11g network has different 32-bit randomly generated encryption key.
I toggled the laptop between each wireless connection and ran 3 tests.
802.11a - 2 to 3 bars signal strength - 4452 kbps/sec, 4910 and 4032 (Laptop cpu load ~12-15%)
802.11g - 5 bars signal strength - 8751 kbps/sec, 8571 and 9489 (Laptop cpu load ~19-23%)
802.11n - 4 bars signal strength - 22450 kbps/sec, 23120, 23510 (Laptop cpu load ~24-27%)
Not only did 802.11n perform well but it has excellent penetration considering it's in the basement sitting on top of my switch and other computer equipment! The 802.11a network performs better on the first floor but not good enough.
