Switch log messages

Is there a way to have switches send heartbeat messages to a syslog server? We are trying to setup a scenario that will allow our monitoring servers the ability to know that switches are alive and well. At the moment the switches may not send a log message for a bit of time which results in our monitoring devices thinking they are down. This can be ANY type of message - as long as the monitoring devices sees a log entry from the switches.

Thanks

Pete

Hello Pete,

for L2 Lan switches it is common to ping their management IP address to check that they are alive.

Or also some SNMP queries from time to time to check their CAM table size

There are ways to reduce messages sent to syslog server but not an easy one  to create one every few seconds

Probably with IP SLA or EEM if supported this could be done but it is not a common approach.

Hope to help
