Connecting to Router through Modem & AUX port but can't type

Hi all

I am having an issue with connecting to a Cisco 7201 via the AUX port through a modem. The modem is plugged into the AUX port and I am dialing into the modem, everything seems to be working fine as I get a login prompt and my banner etc but I can't type anytihng. If I type then nothings happens... If I just type a bunch of random characters on the keyboard then when the authentication prompt times out and it goes back to the username, it will show a few of those characters.. I have tried many things, changing speeds etc, I have even tried changing modems and it is doing the exact same thing. Any help appreciated.

Here is my config:

line aux 0
exec-timeout 2 0
modem Dialin
transport input all
stopbits 1
speed 115200
flowcontrol hardware

I have searched on here and found people having similar problems but no solutions. I have tried this one a Cisco 2821 with the same config and it works with no problem, the only difference is the phone line is different.

Help!

Thanks

Hello Mark,

>> speed 115200

how can you use this speed with a dialup modem (max 56 kbps in one direction CO to user, 33 kbps user to CO )?

you need to use a slower speed for sure

Hope to help

Giuseppe

Hi Giuseppe

thanks for the response, I did try setting the speed to 9600 and also 33400 and none of those worked. I set it back to 33400 now and tried it again and it is still doing the exact same thing.. I was under the impression that the aux speed was only the speed of the communications between the modem and the router, not the actual dial up speed.

Mark

Hello Mark,

that is correct however I would use a slower speed

I will review your attached config with more attention

Edit:

some commands may be missing have a look at

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk801/tk36/technologies_tech_note09186a0080093c76.shtml

modem inout

exec-timeout 0 0

and some AT commands have to sent to the modem via the AUX port, a chat script can be used for this part

Hope to help

If this helps anybody, I managed to find the solutuion to this problem. The issue was a bug with IOS 12.4(24)T2 and 7201 routers. Cisco recognised there was an issue and created a bug ID for it, the ID is: CSCtj27898. they fixed the issue in later IOS releases.
