unified communications with Unity Connections

I am in the progress of moving my Unity 5 to Unity Connections. I am using unified communications ( voicemail via email) on my Unity 5. I use Lotus notes so on Unity connections it isn't so pretty and it is a very manual process to get it on all users. I would like the voicemail in the same mailbox as email and not an imap mailbox. I noticed the SMTP setting. Has anyone gotten it to work and does it send voicemail to a relay to integrate with email?

Hi

The email relay feature will send email off to your mail server; once it's gone that way you can't retrieve it via the phone. The other option is that it can send it to SMTP and keep a local copy; that way you can delete every voicemail twice. A nice article by Bill details it:

Sounds to me like you are moving away from Unified Messaging to a non-Unified Messaging system, and then trying to simulate UM.

I would probably stick with Unity as you have it now...

Funny.  Sorry to come in all late.  I didn't notice Aaron already responded.

I agree with Aaron (+5 to big A).  If you really like UM and can't live without it, then you stick with Unity.  There are trade-offs between Unity and Unity Connection.  My general recommendation on the two is that if you must have UM then Unity, otherwise Unity Connection.

Don't sweat it - since I was just pirating (publicising?) your blog anyway it's better to get it from the horse's mouth

I can certainly understand. You can use voicemail relay to get the message in one inbox. There are two variations of relay. One is to simply relay (Unity doesn't store the message) and the second is to accept the message and then relay. In this latter case Unity will store the message and you will have a copy in your Inbox. Therein lies a problem. The E-mail inbox copy and the unity connection copy are just that, copies. So if you delete the message in your e-mail inbox, your phone will still have the MWI light lit. I did a quick write up on the differences here:

http://www.netcraftsmen.net/resources/blogs/voicemail-only-voicemail-relay-and-integrated-messaging-options-with-unity-connection.html

And another quick one on UM vs. Integrated Messaging put together by a colleague of mine:

http://www.netcraftsmen.net/resources/blogs/integrated-messaging-vs-unified-messaging.html

If after reading these you decide to stick with integrated messaging, you also need to keep in mind that Lotus Notes clients (at least the latest versions I have looked at) don't support IMAP-Idle. This means that each client connection has a +75% greater impact on the CPU.

HTH.

Bill
