Non SNMP Devices

We have some IP network devices with don't run SNMP but are important to our infrastructure.

Is it possible using LMS3.2 to ping these devices on a scheduled (eg, every 15mins) and then send an email and/or raise a DFM alert if the ping is not responded too..

Any ideas? Or suggestions on a better way to achieve this??

This is not possible for LMS to do directly. However, you could setup IP SLA collectors (using IPM) to ping these devices, then have the IP SLA source devices send syslog messages to RME when the pings timeout. RME could then notify you via email using an Automated Action.

Thanks Joe - sounds like a good solution.

Can you advise how to get the IP SLA source device to send a syslog message when the ping fails, and also how to set up an automated action in RME. I've never done these before?

First, go to IPM > Admin > IPSLA Syslog Configuration. Enable syslog on the source device(s). Then, define an Operation under IPM > Collector Mgmt > Operations with an enabled reaction. For example, create a timeout reaction with a threshold type of "immediate", and a reaction of "SNMP Trap". Then, create a Collector using that Operation on your source device. When the event occurs (e.g. a timeout in this case), a syslog message will be generated by the source device (in addition to an SNMP trap).

Now, in RME, go to RME > Tools > Syslog > Automated Actions, and define a new Automated Action. The message to match will be:

Facility : RTT

Severity : 3

Mnemonic : IPSLATHRESHOLD

Description : *

Then, any time the threshold is violated, RME will generate the desired action (e.g. email).
