3 of 5 2950s aren't getting an IP address

I'm new to the world of Cisco, so here we go:

We have 5 2950 switches that are all connected through ports 23 and 24 with the final one going to our Win 2k3 DHCP/DNS server.  There is only 1 Vlan (as far as I can tell) that are all working fine.

However, only 2 of them have a local IP address, which throws me off.  Am I wrong to assume that all 5 should have an IP address?   I'd like to be able to remotely administer them through the http interface, if possible.  If not, is the only way to log into them through the console/telnet?   The only difference I can see in the setup is that Vlan1 doesn't have an IP address setup within it.  When I do a "show ip interface brief Vlan 1" command it says it's administratively closed.

Because I also read "Only one management VLAN can be administratively active at a time." I closed out of the http interfaces for the 2 interactive switches and the same thing happened.

Tips? Direction? Help?

Thanks,

Mike

Yes, each switch should have a different address.

Hi Mike,

In order to manage your switches via /telnet/HTTP.etc.., you need to have a management vlan with one IP per device.  Don't use vlan 1.  Use for example vlan 2 or 10 for your management and give each device an IP address.

Example:

vlan 10

subnet 10.10.10.0/24

router ip address 10.10.10.1/24

on 2950-1 create vlan 10 and ip address 10.10.10.11/24

on 2950-2 create vlan 10 and ip address 10.10.10.22/24

on 2950-3 create vlan 10 and ip address 10.10.10.33/24

on 2950-4 create vlan 10 and ip address 10.10.10.44/24

on 2950-5 create vlan 10 and ip address 10.10.10.55/24

Good, so I'm on the right track.  I have some follow up questions:

1.  Will implementing the changes you indicated interrupt network connectivity?

2.  Are the instructions how to designate/change a vlan's IP address in the documentation for the 2950?  I think setup the management vlan initially from the Cluster Management Suite, but then how do I setup the vlan on the switches that I can't get into the http?

Thanks so much for your help

It should not but to be safe do it during an outage window after hours.

2.  Are the instructions how to designate/change a vlan's IP address in the documentation for the 2950?  I think setup the management vlan initially from the Cluster Management Suite, but then how do I setup the vlan on the switches that I can't get into the http?

The only IP you should have on the 2950s is for management since it is layer-2 device.

Here is a link on how to configure 2950 for management access
