Switch capacity

Hi All,

We are planning to put point to point connections between the DC and DR site for replication purpose with 2 different link's each of 655 mbps. PBR will also be configured on the switches for load distribution purposes. Good amount of real time traffic is expected to flow between the 2 sites.

My query is which one of the 3750/3400/4924 metro gig switch suffice to our above requirement.

Hi Amit,

3750 series switch are pretty good devices. 3750-G's back plane is 32 Gig and if you want to go with a higher back plane speed you can use 3750-E (64Gig). The G series comes with 4 one Gig SFPs for uplinks and the E series come with 2 10Gig X2 or 4 1Gig SFPs for uplinks. You can use any of the them as a layer-2 and/or layer-3 switch. Also 3750s are stackable in case you need that feature.

One of the consultants have suggested us 3750 metro ethernet switch. Is there too much of a difference between 3750G and 3750 metro ethernet switches.

Our aim is to get the replication traffic between the DC and DR sites to pass without facing too many issues thats the reason why the switches connecting them need to be good enough to handle the traffic.

Quite a bit. The ME switch is designed for Metro ethernet services so it supports Hierarchical QOS, traffic shaping, vlan translation, MPLS, EoMPLS and VPLS.

The useful feature for you out of the above may be the QOS/traffic shaping functionality but if you don't need this then you could just as easily use the 3750G.

Hi Amit,

Yes, there is difference. 3750 metro is targeting for metro access switch; as Jon has mentioned it has some metro features that 3750 doesnt have. Since you will have sub-rate circuit then probably you will need HQoS on ES port.
