CIPC over VPN problem

I have a problem when using Cisco IP Communicator remotely using a Cisco vpn connection over the internet.

The CIPC registers O.K and I can hear the dial tone and dial internal numbers.

However, when I dial 9 to access the outside line, all goes silent, I cannot hear the dial tone of the pstn as I usually would after dialling 9.(works o.k on internal lan phones)

If I dial a number on the PSTN it does actually ring at the remote end, but I would be unaware as I can hear nothing.

If anybody has any suggestions for me I would be grateful to hear them.
