Which switches to use?

We are about to install a network on a ship.

There will be about a 150 users, 120 ip telephones, over 100 cameras and at least 100 televisions on the network. These devices will be located around the ship. Each of the comms rooms are connected with nulticore multimode fibre. 50% of the connections will be located in 1 area. Which devices would be recommended for such a network. It has bee suggested we use 3750E for the core, But I'm thinking 4500 or the new 3750X.

Hello Ken,

a stack of 2 C3750E or of 2 C3750-X is probably  the best choice.

It allows to use both uplinks of access layer switches thanks to cross-stack etherchannel (otherwise one link is in STP blocking state)

C4500 is good at access layer because it is modular, but it has not enough switching capabilities per linecard to be used in core.

Classic linecards: 6 Gbps per direction to the backplane

New E linecards: 24 Gbps per direction to the backplane but requires new supervisors and a -E chassis

So only E linecards can have acceptable performance in the core. But you would need two systems for adequate redundancy  in the core.

Hi Ken,

A few months ago, a cruise ship in the US was geared up with >150 Cisco wireless access points.  The core was a 6500E with Sup720.  I'd prefer using the newer 3750X.  The 10Gb of the 3750X would go hand-in-hand with the 6704 10Gb line card.  This line card is capable of data traffic at wire speed, 10 Gb, with no over-subscription.
