FWSM and multiple ISP

Hello everyone

I was wondering if there is a way with a 6500 Catalyst with FWSM 3.2(5) to have multiple (two) ISPs connected to it, having one as the default and the other one acting as failover?

We have two ISPs right now and are trying to figure out a way to have one work as the default gateway for all our internet traffic and in case that one fails, switch automatically to the other.

It's not supported on v3.2 but on v4.0 you can tell the FWSM to monitor a static route and have a backup static route to use if the primary route fails so perhaps you could look to upgrade -

FWSM 4.0 route monitoring

Alternatively could you run a routing protocol such as OSPF between your ISP routers and the FWSMs ?

Hello Lior,

you can take advantage of the presence of the FWSM to implement a nice trick:

you can put the ISPs on a VRF so you can use MSFC routing capabilities to do the routing job: in the FWSM you can have a routed context between the VRF and the global routing table.
