Hi,
I need some clarification regarding 6500 sup engines. These may be real real basic doubts.
For 6500 sup engine 720, with PFC and MSFC on the sup 720 card itself. ( PFC and MSFC are integrated on sup engine itself), these can run on Native or hybrid mode.
1. Cisco IOS on Sup engine and also on MSFC card ( do we need two different images for each card ? ) - Cisco IOS mode
2. CatOS on Sup Engine and Cisco IOS on MSFC (diferent images for each card) - Hybrid Mode
Am I corect in these statements?
For 6500 without MSFC: Do we need to install a seperate line card ( on chasis slot ) that will function as MSFC and will have a Cisco IOS and Sup engine will have CatOS.
Please share the experience.
Thanks
Subodh

Both statement are right. For the first one, the MSFC will download the image from the SUP when it was booting up.

There isn't any line card like that exist, you can buy an field upgradable MSFC and install that into the SUP yourself. Also, this situation only exist in SUP2 or before. SUP720 and SUP32 will come with MSFC by default.

yes The MSFC & PFC is integrated in to the sup 720 engine can either run 8.1 Hybrid) or Native 12.2(24)SX and higher.
You can run in Hybrid mode by having the CatOS on the sup engine and IOS on the MSFC or just Native IOS on both MSFC and sup engine so having s single IOS software image as the system image to run both sup engine and MSFC.

Hi Subodh,
With Sup-720 it is all Native IOS and no more CATOS. The MSFC and PFC are card that comes with the Sup. you do not need any extra slot for any of them except for the Sup itsef. You just have to pick the type PFC you need for your Sup i.e PFC-3C. PFC-3CXL, 3B and 3BXL.
Here is the data sheet:

Modular IOS is also supported.
