I am preparing for the CCNA. I was given the follwing practice question. Given subnet mask 255.255.254.0, which of the following can be assigned to hosts? 186.54.3.0, 175.33.3.255, 26.35.2.255, 152.135.7.0.

[For the CCNA in 2003 .254 was a valid mask. Is .254 a valid mask?]

Yes, 255.255.254.0 is a valid mask.

The followings are valid hosts for the above mask:

186.54.3.0
26.35.2.255
152.135.7.0

Could you explain how you came to the answers. So, with a 254 mask, there are no network nor broadcast addresses?

Here we go:

186.54.3.0 (mask: 255.255.254.0):

Network address: 186.54.2.0

Broadcast address: 186.54.3.255

175.33.3.255 (mask: 255.255.254.0):

Network address: 175.33.2.0

Broadcast address: 175.33.3.255

26.35.2.255 (mask: 255.255.254.0):

Network address: 26.35.2.0

Broadcast address: 26.35.3.255

152.135.7.0 (mask: 255.255.254.0):

Network address: 152.135.6.0

Broadcast address: 152.135.7.255
