Sip phone registeration !

Unanswered Question

Hi all.

I have started cvoice 6.0 and came around this statement

"Because SIP is a peer-to-peer protocol, the Cisco Unified Communication Manager does not control SIP devices, and SIP devices do not register with Cisco Unified Communications Manager."

So if i have a third party SIP phone, it will not register with Cucm 6.0 ?

What they are trying to say is that SIP is unlike SCCP and MGCP in that the device is somewhat autonomous. This is one attribute that comes along with a peer-to-peer protocol. H.323 is the same way. If you look at a H.323 gateway in CUCM does it ever show as registered?

For SIP stations (like the Cisco 9971 or even a 3rd party SIP device like CouterPath X-Lite) they will actually register/show registered (at least in my tests).

But, I don't believe SIP trunks (e.g. gateways) will show as registered.
