Hi All

Is there anyway of connecting anaologue phones via a switch which is linked by fibre. Phones will be situated in a secutity gate house away from the main building but the individual POTS lines will be presented in the main building comms room

Hello,

From my point of view the best way to proceed will be using a device like a VG202 that allows you to connect two FXO devices and connect them to you ethernet switch I know that the issue in this case will be distance, but as far as I know Cisco does not has any device were you can plug and analog phone and gives you a fiber channel connections.

Hi Walter

Thanks very much for the input, it is much appreciated. Does the VG202 work independantly of any form of CallManager?

Best regards

Simon

Guys can I therefore assume that if I connect the analogue lines into a VGxxx phones can be connected anywhere in the network no matter where the location?

Hi Walter

Excuse my ignorance but I have completely overlooked the scenario. I now understand that I would have to trunk the analogue lines via FXO if they are presented seperately. Then I would have to connect via FXS.....such a stupid mistake to make but at least I get it now......thks

I do not think that Cisco do anything that allows you to tunnel analogue voice

over an Ethernet network as you describe. There are some vendors that offer products that can do this such as Jumboswitch (never used them myself).

The approach I would probably take is to put IP phones in the security hut and a small CallManager Express system in the main office with FXO ports to connect the analog FXO lines.

Hi James

Thanks very much for your input. I desperately wanted confirmation that this could not be done over the ethernet network. Your suggestions are welcomed.

Cheers

Simon

Yes, the VG202 and any other voice gateway can work without Call Manager.

I recommend you locate a reputable consultant or certified cisco partner for this,  and do not attempt to make purchases or configuration by yourself.

Incorrect, any Cisco voice gateway lets you do that, since 1997 approximately.

Sorry for my confusion

As mentioned in my answer to Walter, I have got myself tangled up in the FXS and FXO web. I now understand that if I have seperately presented POTS PSTN lines then I would have to bring them in to the system via FXO trunk lines. These can then be distributed via the FXS to the end device....I hope I am being clearer now

Thanks again for your time, much appreciated

If you want to consolidate more than 2, but less than 24 alalog ports in to a single device you could look away from a VG 2XX.   We've implemented a Cisco 1700 Router with some FXS cards in it.   They look to be EOL now, but it's still an option depending on how mission critical your end phones are.

The obvious thing to use is an ATA186

( or whatever is going to replace it) this has one ethernet port and

2 pots ports and is ideal for what you want to do

So I would need 2 ATA,s, one to connect the pots line to the network and another at the device end?

Not really, because ATA is FXS only, not FXO.

You need to specifiy devices to be connected and needs in full detail.
