Prioritizing Video Traffic Over the LAN.

Can someone advise the best switch for video optimization?  We currently have a Cisco 4948.  The switch handles both video and standard data.  I just don't feel the video traffic is managed properly.  Can someone also direct me to a link explaning some config options?

Thank you

Charlie

Hello Charlie,

the C4948 should be good enough for video if configured appropriately.

You look like interested in QoS but multicast configuration may play a role too depending from your own environment, that is your company is delivering video traffic as multicast sessions or unicast flows.

a good source of information is in the Solution Reference network designs

http://www.cisco.com/go/srnd

there is section also for Video.

see

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/solutions/Enterprise/Video/qosmrn.html

Hope to help

What Cisco Catalyst offers COS and has the ability to effectively prioritize traffic?  We currently are running a 4948 model.

Thanks,

Charlie

Your 4948 is perfectly capable of prioritising traffic, it has a full QOS feature set ie. marking/policing/queueing etc. See this config guide to get you started -

http://cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst4500/12.2/46sg/configuration/guide/qos.html

note the config guide is for the 4500 but they share the same features as the 4900.
