Please check the detailed explanation given below:

  • Cisco IOS Software naming conventions for the MSFC1, MSFC2, MSFC2A, and MSFC3

    • c6msfc—MSFC1

    • c6msfc2—MSFC2

    • c6msfc2a—MSFC2A

    • c6msfc3—MSFC3

    • c6msfc-boot—MSFC1 boot image

    • c6msfc2-boot—MSFC2 boot image

These are examples of Cisco IOS Software images for the MSFC:

    • c6msfc-boot-mz.121-19.E is the Catalyst 6500/6000 MSFC1 Cisco IOS Software Release 12.1(19)E boot image.

    • c6msfc-ds-mz.121-19.E is the Catalyst 6500/6000 MSFC1 Cisco IOS Software Release 12.1(19)E image.

    • c6msfc2-jsv-mz.121-19.E is the Catalyst 6500/6000 MSFC2 Cisco IOS Software Release 12.1(19)E image.

    • c6msfc2a-adventerprisek9_wan-mz.122-18.SXF is the Catalyst 6500/6000 MSFC2A Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(18)SXF image.

    • c6msfc3-jsv-mz.122-14.SX2 is the Catalyst 6500 MSFC3 Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(14)SX2 image.

  • You have selected the boot image and for conversion from CATOS to IOS we need a 'IOS software'.

    s222-adventerprisek9_wan-mz.122-18.SXF17a.bin

The above is the latest of IOS software for sup2/msfc2.

Please confirm the DRAM and Flash size before installing the same.

    s222-adventerprisek9_wan-mz.122-18.SXF17a.bin
    Release Date: 19/Mar/2010
    Size: 50854.57 KB  (52075076 bytes)
Minimum Memory: DRAM:256 MB  Flash:64 MB

get to the cisco site and go to software download site and get into Switches > Cisco Catalyst 6509 Switch > Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Supervisor Engine 2 / MSFC2 > IOS Software >

and check the IOS compatible with your DRAM and Flash.

I have an older 6509 with dual sup 2+
    slot details:-

    Slot 1: WS-X6K-SUP2-2GE
    Slot 2: WS-X6K-SUP2-2GE
    Slot 3:
    Slot 4:
    Slot 5:WS-C6500-SFM (Fabric module)
    Slot 6:WS-SVC-FWM-1 (Firewall)
    Slot 7:
    Slot 8:
    Slot 9:SW-SVC-IDSM2 (IDS)

I want to upgrade CatOS to native IOS.

your suggested IOS is 50MB size, & recomented Minimum Memory DRAM:256 MB  Flash:64 MB

    But this Switch Flash=32MB & memory=128MB. So I installed with another c6msfc2-boot-mz.121-20.E3.bin & c6msfc2-jsv-mz.121-20.E3.bin

(ie: I insert first sup-engine & installed IOS. then I remove converted supervisor from chassis and insert second sup-engine to first slot & installed )

After installation, I put both sup modules and switch on. Now first module is working (All LED is ON). but second slot is switched off & second sup LED not blinking.
    could you please help me...

I removed second sup-engine and put Fabric module(slot 5), that time switch is overloading and rebooting.
display message: SP: oir_disable_notice: slot2: sec nmp failed to go online

then I removed fabric module & restarted switch,
& I checked dir bootflash: command. it displaying...

    Hello George,

you will need to convert from CatOS to IOS one supervisor at a time following the procedure for conversion

so your first step should be to remove one supervisor from the chassis

apply the procedure to running supervisor

    remove converted supervisor from chassis

    install second supervisor

apply procedure to this second supervisor

at the end you will re-insert the first supervisors and you should end up with two supervisors running same IOS code in RPR or SSO (if supported)

    see

    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps708/products_tech_note09186a008015bfa6.shtml

follow the procedure step by step and perform the initial checks about minimal versions requirements for catOS boot loader to support 64 MB flash

be prepared it takes long time to do it.

    Hope to help

    Giuseppe

    Hello George,

I'm afraid you did a terrible mess with this device.

First of all, the objective is to install images for native IOS modes like the following:

Here are examples of Cisco IOS Software images for the Supervisor Engine 1 and 2 with MSFC1 or MSFC2:

c6sup-is-mz.120-7.XE1 is the Catalyst 6500/6000 Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0(7)XE1 image (with Supervisor Engine 1/MSFC1).

c6sup11-dsv-mz.121-19.E1 is the Catalyst 6500/6000 Cisco IOS Software Release 12.1(19)E1 image (with Supervisor Engine 1/MSFC1).

c6sup12-js-mz.121-13.E9 is the Catalyst 6500/6000 Cisco IOS Software Release 12.1(13)E9 image (with Supervisor Engine 1/MSFC2).

c6sup22-psv-mz.121-11b.EX1 is the Catalyst 6500 Cisco IOS Software Release 12.1(11b)EX1 image (with Supervisor Engine 2/MSFC2).

All images containing MSFC2 in the name are images only for the MSFC2 not images for both the MSFC and layer2 supervisor

please read very carefully many times if necessary the upgrade procedure

    see

    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps708/products_tech_note09186a008015bfa6.shtml

the images that you have mentioned are not good for conversion from CatOS to IOS they are still images only for MSFC2.

if you have a valid service contract it may be wise to open a service request in order to be assisted for:

    a) recovering from your failed attempt

    b) moving to IOS if possible with your current hardware

I'm sorry but our remote help is limited and I had tried to warn you about the fact it is a long and delicate procedure

    Hope to help

    Giuseppe

Your Sup 2 must also have a msfc card in order to convert to IOS , if it is strictly a sup2 with no routing function you cannot convert it .  you also have to make sure you have enough ram and flash to accomodate the generally larger IOS images . You may even need a rommon upgrade...

Threre is any configuratin in MSFC for upgrading IOS
