Sup 2-2GE with C6500-SFM in Catalyst 6513 ?

Hallo,

im a little confused. I have to build a scalable system with 336 gigabit ports minimum.

So I decided to use an 6513 chassis. Ive got a Sup 2-2GE and a C6500-SFM on stock

and want to use it. I was searching the internet and the Cisco website for information.

At the "Power-Calculator" and "Dyn. Conf. Tool" I can only choose C6500-SFM2 for the 6513 chassis

and the Sup2-PFC2 and i found different declarations about this topic (at least there are

different threads here at this board).

The "Catalyst 6500 Series Switches Installation Guide" said, that I can do that.

My Sup2 is a Sup2-2GE with PFC2 and MSFC2 shipped before November  2001

My Configuration:

Chassis: 6513
Power: 2x 6000W  AC
Fan: WS-C6K-13SLOT-FAN2
1     Sup 2-2GE
2     WS-X6548-GE-TX    ---    ---
3    WS-X6548-GE-TX    ---    ---
4     WS-X6548-GE-TX    ---    ---
5    WS-X6548-GE-TX    ---    ---
6     WS-X6548-GE-TX    ---    ---
7    C6500-SFM
8     WS-X6548-GE-TX    ---    ---
9    WS-X6748-GE-TX    ---    ---
10     WS-X6748-GE-TX    ---    ---
11    WS-X6748-GE-TX    ---    ---
12     WS-X6748-GE-TX    ---    ---
13    WS-X6748-SFP

System is configured for possible Sup upgrade to Sup720 in the future.

Now my question: Could i do that ?

thanks for help and with best regards

Hello T. Sancho,

this may happen because SFM is not selled anymore, if documentation tells you can do it it is possible

be aware that sup2 is end of life now

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/switches/ps5718/ps708/prod_end-of-life_notice0900aecd80646c9c.html

so building a new system on it may be not wise

Hope to help

Hi

The WS-X67XX modules NEED a Sup720 with 20Giabit Channels, no degradation to 8 giga possible!

IF you use a Sup720 it cold work.

Your version with Sup2 and SFM work only with the WS-X65xx.

Details:

The WS-X65XX modules has a dedicated 8 gigabit channel to the sfm with fallback possibility to the common 32 giga (true 4x 8giga) parallel bus

A sfm has 16 times 8 gigabit channels, but the backplane decide the destination:

In your 6513 Chassis have each of the upper half slot one channel to the sfm

And each of the lower half slot two channel to the sfm.

So idea to put 67xx modules at the lower slot is good but NOT with the sfm.

please have a look at these links.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps700/products_tech_note09186a00801c6652.shtml

first link: click "produkt overview" --> "6513 switch" and scroll slightly down (Table 1.21 - Modules)

Here is the SFM & SFM2 featured in the 6513 with the Sup2

second link: First Table. No support for SFM

wtf ????

I know that the Sup2 is EOL, but I have two of it and if both are gone I can replace them

with a Sup720. So, I have no problem with that. Thats why I planned it this way.

I thought that the FSM can handle both, the 65XX module with gen1 fabric and the

full-fabric 67XX.... Because its a Switching Fabric Module

Hello T. Sancho,

Andy is right (rated as deserved, I had missed this point)  you cannot interconnect linecards of series 67xx without using a sup720 that has an on-board 720 Gbps switching fabric

if you want to use these linecards you need a Sup720 supervisor

Hope to help

Hi Sancho

If you found a accelerator for the fsm or fsm2?

Both switch fabrics has ONLY 8 gigabit channel to the slots.

As I say before the 67XX NEED 20 gigabit channels.

This speeds are fix for the line modules, so how you will bring this together?

The build-in switch fabric at sup720 as on each channel an accelerator chip changes the channel speed from 8 or 20 gigabit to the switch-fabric internal 60 gigabit speed.

Slot 1-8 with a single channel supports only 6724

Slot 9-13 can support any 67XX card

BUT ONLY WITH A SUP720 AND BUILD-IN 16 (sup720) -20 (VS720) channel switch fabric

The 67XX module are permitted by the chassis but NOT!!! by the SFM or SFM2.

Regards

Andy
