Richard,

You can not create an SVI on the router.  You can however assign vlan id under the physical interface

interface gi0/0

vlan-id xxx

HTH

Reza

correct me if I'm wrong but isnt SVI just for switching? This is a 2911 router.

Hi

2911 is an router , But if you have switch module then you can create SVI interface . Because i was having 1812 router and in that i was having 8 port switch module and i was able to create SVI interface.

But need to check wether 2911 Router support this feature or not.

HI Reza,

I am in the process of replacing a Cisco Sw 3550 which is acting as a border router (connecting to provider and to the Lan with a default Ip route statement 0/0) with a Cisco 2911 router however, it seems that I need a Switch to have my vlans on it and only adding VLAN Ids on the GE INterfaces on teh new router. well, I do not have a Switch.

can I still do this?

Please advsie,

Regards,

Masood

This is my fisrt time using the 2911, how is it different from the 2800 series routers that all

ow me to create vlans without having a switch module installed. I just think it's odd that I cant even create a vlan.

Thanks very much for your repleis, I very much appreciate the help.

.,

Richard,

why vlan on the router?

You can have a router on a stick with subinterfaces with dot1q vlan tag without addtional switch module

Francisco.

I always use a vlan on the router for the voice. I'll have a

hotspot hanging off the router as well, that'll also be a seperate vlan. I just like to keep stuff seperate where I can.

According to cisco you have to use the vlan-database, which is odd since that's on the brink of not supported anymore.

You gonna need to have EtherSwitch Service Module on your router to create a vlan SVI. Or the other option is to have the vlans on a switch and create the subinterfaces on the router to do inter-vlan routing between your vlans on the switch.

By having the  Cisco Enhanced EtherSwitch Service Modules, it will greatly expands the 2911 router's capabilities by integrating industry-leading Layer 2 and Layer 3 switching with feature sets identical to those found in the Cisco Catalyst® 3560-E and Catalyst 2960 Series Switches with POE for your phones.

Francisco.
