Joseph,

There's a Cisco tool called Cisco Feature Navigator.
It shows which features can be done for each image among other things.

802.1q is not supported on your current IOS.

Federico.

Hi Joseph,

Are you using a switch that only supports (or is only configured) for 10Mbps?

Federico.

I am using a 2950.

Ok but the interface of the 2950 that you're connecting to the router is not hard-coded to 10Mbps?

If you change the configuration from trunk to access on the switch (disable trunking on the router side), does it work?

I just want to see if the problem is with the trunking (don't think so), or the problem is there' s no connectivity at all between the switch and the router).

Federico.

I'll tell you what I am doing so you have a better understanding.

I am hooking up a switch to a router so I can incorporate inter-vlan routing.

I have a switch with 10/100 ports and I have a router that only has 10base-T interface card.

I want to create a trunk between the router and the switch so that I can inter-vlan.

When I go to assign the IP address on the router sub-interface it tells me:

'Configuring IP routing on a LAN subinterface is only allowed if that subinterface is already configured as part of an IEEE 802.10, IEEE 802.1Q, or ISL vLAN."

You need to enter the encapsulation before you can enter an IP ie.

int fa0/1.10

encapsulation dot1q 10

ip address 192.168.5.1 255.255.255.0

Jon

Before assigning the IP on the sub-interface, you need the command:  encapsulation dot1q xx  --> xx is the number of the VLAN

Otherwise you can't configure an IP address.

You can trunk on 10mbps interfaces but support for this was brought in later than with 100Mbps interfaces. Also you need the correct feature set to support 802.1q trunking.

So what is the router you are using and what is the feature set -  a "sh version" will give this info.

You will need at least 12.2(2)T for 802.1q support on the 10BaseT interface of your 2600 router -

802.1q support 2600

When I do encap dot1q command.

It does not know what it is. I might not be able to do this with this switch here in my school's lab.

Thank you guys.

I am going to try another part of the lab here.

I am going to start over with the project -

2940/2950 and 2960 switches only support dot1q trunking therefore you don't need to enter the "encapsulation dot1q".
