CUPC Dialing Shared Contact Group

We are seeing an issue with the outlook CUPC client that is preventing users from dialing their contacts.

If they go into their personel contact list, they can choose a contact, then use the CUPC drop down tool bar to select which number to dial (Business, Cell, Home, etc).    They pick the number, it then dials their phone for them.

If they have access to someone else's contact list, they loose this ability.     The CUPC toolbar does not show the Business, Cell, Home etc options to allow them do dial their phone.   This is also the case for Public folder contacts.

Is there a way to fix this so they can use their CUPC plugin to dial these numbers?

That's a known limitation.

CUPC can dial "local contacts" only.

Hopefully, CUPC 8 will fix that.

Ouch, thats pretty stupid.    Has there been any confirmation that 8 will fix it?

What have people been doing in the mean time?   Is Click-to-Call a better option?

Not in the current version of Click-to-Call.  It also can dial local contacts only.  You'll have to wait for the next version.

For future version, they all share the same components.  ie. if it works for CUPC, it'll work for click-to-call.  Take a look at http://htluo.blogspot.com/2010/03/client-convergence.html

Can you please clarifywhat's meant by "local contacts"?

"local contacts" means the contacts you created manually from your Outlook.  Not the contacts that downloaded from Exchange server (a.k.a. GAL - Global Address List).

The work around would be to add/save the Global address locally which isn't really a big deal unless I'm missing the point? thanks....

I don't know how to add the Global address locally.  Would you mind sharing?

Michael

In the address book, when I right click the contact name I get three options one of which is "Add to contacts". Select it and use one of the save options to save it (save and close, save and new or just save ...)

Oh... I see.  Ya, of course you can do that.  But how about the other 11,000 users in GAL?  Is there any easy way to add 11,000 users from GAL to local contacts?

Michael

Not that I know of ....

Copying shared contacts to each users local contacts completely defeats the purpose of a public contacts folder. The purpose of a shared contact list is to have a single place to update contacts that are used by multiple users.    This way it is extremely easy to update, add, remove the contacts.   If each users had a local copy of these numbers, it would be a nightmare to makes changes or additions.

Couldn't agree more .....
