Streaming protocols.. how to block/shape?

Hello all,

As most people know, the football (soccer) World Cup is upon us, and will surely cause havoc for corporate networks evereywhere... and mine is no exception.

I know how QoS works very well on the ASA, but I need to do something about streaming without blocking all access outbound to the websites in question.

So, live.itv.com and bbc.co.uk will be streaming all of the world cup matches, anyone got any suggestions on how to go about finding out what streaming protocols they use? Or is there a generic list I should just shape traffic outbound on? Or will this not work and is there a better way?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

James.

James,

I know what you mean - I personally block macromedia-fcs (inbeded flash players) & RTSP.  However users still manage to stream via http - that's were a network analysis comes into play.  I use netflow on routers/switches to send flow information to a netflow collector - so I can see the amount of BW being used per connection, and if a user has multiple connections (allows me to catch P2P)

Then I fit all that into my QoS policy on my switches & routers.
