ISDN E1 Issues

Answered Question
Jun 12th, 2010

HI,

i have a Cisco 2821 router with an E1 ISDN30 card for PSTN access. below is the partial config.

!
card type e1 0 0

!

network-clock-participate wic 0
network-clock-select 1 E1 0/0/0
!

!

isdn switch-type primary-net5
!

!
voice call send-alert
voice rtp send-recv
!
voice service voip
allow-connections h323 to h323
allow-connections h323 to sip
allow-connections sip to h323
allow-connections sip to sip
h323
  no h225 timeout keepalive
  call preserve
modem passthrough nse codec g711ulaw
!
!
voice class codec 1
codec preference 1 g711ulaw
codec preference 2 g711alaw
codec preference 3 g729r8
!
!
!
voice class h323 1
h225 timeout tcp establish 3
!
!
voice-card 0
no dspfarm
!

!
controller E1 0/0/0
pri-group timeslots 1-31
!

interface Serial0/0/0:15
no ip address
encapsulation hdlc
isdn switch-type primary-net5
isdn incoming-voice voice
no cdp enable
!

voice-port 0/0/0:15
cptone GB
!
voice-port 0/1/0
cptone GB
!
voice-port 0/1/1
cptone GB
!

but this is what i see on the sh isdn status command:

ISDN Serial0/0/0:15 interface
        dsl 1, interface ISDN Switchtype = primary-net5
    Layer 1 Status:
        DEACTIVATED
    Layer 2 Status:
        TEI = 0, Ces = 1, SAPI = 0, State = TEI_ASSIGNED
    Layer 3 Status:
        0 Active Layer 3 Call(s)
    Active dsl 1 CCBs = 0
    The Free Channel Mask:  0x00000000
    Number of L2 Discards = 0, L2 Session ID = 4
Total Allocated ISDN CCBs = 0

and this is the output from the sh controller e1 0/0/0 command:

E1 0/0/0 is down.
Applique type is Channelized E1 - balanced
  Cablelength is Unknown
  Receiver has remote alarm.
  alarm-trigger is not set
  Version info Firmware: 20090408, FPGA: 13, spm_count = 0
Framing is CRC4, Line Code is HDB3, Clock Source is Line.
Data in current interval (480 seconds elapsed):

0 Slip Secs, 0 Fr Loss Secs, 0 Line Err Secs, 0 Degraded Mins
0 Errored Secs, 0 Bursty Err Secs, 0 Severely Err Secs, 480 Unavail Secs
  Data in Interval 1:
2 Line Code Violations, 6 Path Code Violations
3 Slip Secs, 0 Fr Loss Secs, 0 Line Err Secs, 0 Degraded Mins
3 Errored Secs, 0 Bursty Err Secs, 0 Severely Err Secs, 779 Unavail Secs
Total Data (last 1 15 minute intervals):
2 Line Code Violations, 6 Path Code Violations,
3 Slip Secs, 0 Fr Loss Secs, 0 Line Err Secs, 0 Degraded Mins,
3 Errored Secs, 0 Bursty Err Secs, 0 Severely Err Secs, 779 Unavail Secs

am i correct in saying that the above issue is because the far−end equipment has a problem with the signal that the far−end equipment receives from the local equipment??

also, the cablelength unknown is strange as we have swapped out the cable already but it stay like this.

could this be an issue with the settings presented from BT not matching my settings on my config. (Framing, LInecode, clocking)

any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Dimitri

I have this problem too.

Hi

Yeah, it's that simple.

Do you have term mon enabled if you are working remotely? Router should give you some message if it can't take the command...

Hi

Config is fine for a BT circuit.

You have remote alarm, but everything else appears down - I'd speak to BT.

thanks Aaron.

that is what i suspected. BT are saying that everything is fine on their end. the engineer went to site yesterday and apparently could make and receive calls when he tested it.

any other thoughts?

Hi

I presume the router is directly connected to the NTE?

Is this the only E1 capable kit you have on site?

I've not seen any BT E1 circuits that run anything other than crc4/hdb3 but you could try switching to 'framing no-crc4' on the E1 controller and doing a shut/no shut. I wouldn't expect this to work though!

It's often difficult to resolve these things without using an E1 tester - that would allow you to prove your own kit isn't faulty as well as testing the BT circuit.

morning Aaron,

yes the router is connected via an ethernet cable to the NTE. it seems though, that it is fibre beyond the NTE, would this have any effect? also, i have just been informed that it is a cable & wireless or THUS ISDN30 and not BT. would they use different settings?

these settings have worked in the past with no problems.

i tried a local loopback test on the E1, does this test that the kit is ok?

this is what im seeing now.

E1 0/0/0 is down.
Applique type is Channelized E1 - balanced
  Cablelength is Unknown
Transmitter is sending remote alarm.
  Receiver is getting AIS.
  alarm-trigger is not set
  Version info Firmware: 20090408, FPGA: 13, spm_count = 0
Framing is CRC4, Line Code is HDB3, Clock Source is Line.
Data in current interval (337 seconds elapsed):
0 Line Code Violations, 0 Path Code Violations
0 Slip Secs, 0 Fr Loss Secs, 0 Line Err Secs, 0 Degraded Mins
0 Errored Secs, 0 Bursty Err Secs, 0 Severely Err Secs, 337 Unavail Secs
Total Data (last 2 15 minute intervals):
0 Line Code Violations, 0 Path Code Violations,
0 Slip Secs, 0 Fr Loss Secs, 0 Line Err Secs, 0 Degraded Mins,
0 Errored Secs, 0 Bursty Err Secs, 0 Severely Err Secs, 1800 Unavail Secs

currently im waiting for an engineer to bring another router and E1 card and i will configure and test.

i will keep you updated.

thanks for all your help.

Hi

Don't worry about what's beyond the NTE; their eng would test it at the point of the E1 presentation with a Trend tester or similar.

I would give the no-crc4 framining a try... if it doesn't work switch it back.

I have also seen one C&W circuit that tested fine on a Trend tester, my cisco box tested fine with the same tester, but the two wouldn't talk to each other. Luckily on that occasion we had another circuit in the same room from C&W, and that circuit worked on our Cisco router. When we pointed this out, they realised there was some setting different on the circuit that they claimed they sometimes had to set for Cisco kit, they made the change and all was well.

We didn't get to the bottom of what exactly they changed, but I can say I've never come accross something like that with any other SP.

i have shut the controller e1 0/0/0  and issued the framing no crc4 command and issued the unshut command but it will not unshut?

it is as simple as that right? im not missing something?

Hi Aaron,

yes i have term mon enabled but im not getting any indication that it comes back up. only once i reload the router does it return to the DEACTIVATED state.

i have swapped the 2821 router with a 2851 with E1 card and configured it and this still does not work.

im going to push this back to the telco now as im certain this is on thier side.

thank you so much for all your help and enjoy your sunday.

hi all,

so the issue with this was the following.

C&W responded to alarms on the circuit and sent an engineer to the exchange to resolve but they didnt know about the NEW circuit being put in for the same company but new office. so, when the resolved the issue on the old line, they unknowingly disconnected the new circuit. there was nothing wrong with any cisco equipment.

they sent an engineer to site last night and configured the new circuit. it is now operational.

thanks all!

Dimitri
