I am trying to get a good understanding on what following terms actually mean related to any switch , say 6500.


- Line card

- Module

- Supervisor engine/module

- backplane

These 2 terms are interchangeable. However, the line card term is often used when referring to switching modules while the module is used when referring to anything that can be install on the available slots.


- Supervisor engine/module

- backplane


Supervisor Engine is the brain of the switch. All traffic in and out of the switch is monitored by this module.

The backplane is the interconnection between the modules. Without the backplane, all modules would sit on an island.
