The 4GB DRAM is only for ASA 5580 model. It is not available for the lower ASA series.

So to answer your questions:

1. Yes, 2 GB is the maximum for ASA5540

2. ASA5540-MEM-2GB=  comes with 2 DIMMS (1GB each).

2GB DRAM is currently the maximum memory on ASA5540.

Here is the release notes for your reference:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asa/asa83/release/notes/asarn83.html#wp37821

Hope that helps.

Thank you Halijen.

Looking at the release notes it does say

"On both the ASA 5580-20 and the ASA 5580-40 adaptive security appliances only 4 GB of memory is available for features. The rest are reserved or used by the OS. The show memory command will only display values relative to 4 GB."

1. Does this still mean that 2GB is the maximum memory we can install?

2. Does 2GB (ASA5540-MEM-2GB=) come as a sing module or 4x512 MB modules?
