2851 & 2811 port config?

Recently got fiber between the buildings. We have an ethernet handoff to our routers. Would like to know proper configuration of interface that is recommended for this type of router to router setup. I have one router going from gigabit ethernet to a fastEthernnet. Thank you.

If you ran fiber then you will need fiber connection at each end or use fiber to copper transceiver

yeah we have all fiber to RJ45 handoffs at each location. Im just looking for best practices in configuring interfaces or recommended.

Hi Chris,

This is an open question on the best practices. It all depends on verious requirements like security, QOS, ACL's, routing etc.

Typically you would let the interfaces on the " auto-negotiation" and let the interfaces auto negotiate the speed and duplex. You can also configure various QOS parameters for different type of traffic and typically shape it on WAN interfaces to allow some traffic burst that can be handled by the ISP as per your SLA. You might also want to rate-limit the traffic for certain type of traffic like data and allow the voice/video traffic to go in higher queues. You can also configure various security parameters like ACL, IPSEC/GRE tunnels and depends on you security policies.

As suggested by Amit best recommendation is to use auto negotiation on port setting as routers Gigabit Ethernet ports are capable of negotiation, but in cases like modular SFP or GBIC types, they do not negotiate. Line protocol will be down for a Gigabit Ethernet port when connected to a Fast Ethernet port.While Cisco devices only support full-duplex, the IEEE 802.3z standard does have support for half-duplex GigabitEthernet. Because of this, duplex is negotiated between GigabitEthernet devices.
