AP1240 AG- radio1 cannot associate; no response

HARDWARE/ISSUE: AIRONET AP1240 which has a 2.4 GHz/ 5 GHz radios and is configured to be used as a access point for radio0 and non-root bridge for radio1 using Right instead of Diversity as its primary connections for the radios, but it would not allow our PDA sytems to connect to the internet.

Troubleshooting: I've checked the IOS, configuration, and its security configurations and none of these configurations have changed from when dot11 radio1 was still working.  I checked the radio channel and the AP is set to a specific radio channel that would not interfere with the rest of the AP's within its group.  I checked all physical hardware(cables and antennas) attached to the AP and nothing seems to have changed.  After going through these steps, I replugged it and I was still unable to connect to the internet.

What could be the problem when I receive this message in the event log? Dot11 radio1 cannot associate; no response.

Can you post the "sh ip interface brief"?

IP interface:

Interface                  IP-Address         OK? Method Status                Protocol
BVI1                       10.120.220.74      YES NVRAM  up                     up

Dot11Radio0                unassigned      YES NVRAM  up                    up

Dot11Radio1                unassigned      YES NVRAM  reset                down

FastEthernet0              unassigned      YES NVRAM  up                    down

Dot11Radio1                unassigned      YES NVRAM  reset                down

Try reloading the AP and do a "sh log".  This will tell you why Radio1 is on "reset".

I don't understand what the problem could be.  I see that when Interface BVI1 and its line protocol changes its state to up, Radio1 cannot associate.

I'm not sure what I need to do; should I disable the Ethernet in order for Radio1 to change its state to up?

Why do you have "station-role non-root" and "payload-encapsulation dot1h" in the config for Dot11Radio1?  If Radio1 is to be used as an access point, this should be "station root".

Radio0 station role is an access point and Radio1 station role is a non-root bridge.  That's why Radio1 configuration is 'station role non-root', but as for the config 'payload encapsulation dot1h', should this config be 'payload encapsulation dot11' ?

Also, should the config line 'payload encapsulation dot1h' be removed since it does not appear in the radio0 configuration??  What is the significance of this line in radio1?

Radio1 station role is a non-root bridge.

Now I understand why it's on "reset".  This is because Radio1 can't "see" the other Radio root-bridge.  Maybe there's not enough signal (because you are using 802.11b).  Switch the configuration around, meaning Radio0 is the non-root-bridge and Radio1 is the access-point.  Make sure you switch the remote side too.

I don't understand why I should switch both radio configurations? I monitor several AP's that have the same config as the one I'm having issues with.  These AP's radio status are up and they provide adequate wireless signals within their designated area.  I've tried to copy the configuration from these AP's, just changing specific details related to this AP and I still hav e the same issue.  I'm' not sure why switching radio0 and radio1 configs would fix the issue if similar AP's are working fine.  FYI... radio1 has wirless standard 802.11A, not B, and radio0 has wireless standard 802.11G if this helps.

Radio1 is 802.11a and Radio0 is 802.11b.  In the wireless LAN world, 802.11b or "b" is well known for it's range and penetrating power in the expense of speed.  802.11a or "a" is the direct opposite:  Short range, low penetrating power but high speed.

If you  don't want to switch the configs, then try moving the AP closer.
