Upgrading IOS on a 3120 switch stack

Answered Question

Hi,

I have been through the Cisco pages and they mention using the .tar file and archive-sw commands but we can't use the .tar vesrion on our switches just the .bin version. We loaded the new version on all the flash systems in the stack and tried to upgrade the stack without causing any loss of connectivity as all the service in the stack are connected to multiple slots in the stack.

We used the reload slot-number to reload each slot one at a time and wait until they have come up before moving onto the next device to keep the correct conenctivity - it was also done out of hours to reduce the risk.

What we found was after reloading the stack master it was showing version mismatch which is what we expected as we were going from the base version to a k9 version of IOS. We then proceeded to reload the 2nd slot and this meant slot 2 and slot one both reloaded? When they came back online we found they both showed version mismatch, which again we expected. What I didn't expect was whenever we did a reload all the mismatch versions reloaded too which menat we ended up losing all connectivity at one point when they all reloaded.

The device is now on the new version and running fine.

My question is what is the right way to reload these devices so they pick up the new code but in a way where we don't lose connectivity whenever we upgrade in the future? Surely there is a way to do it without causing an outage with so much connectivity - this was the first time we have upgraded a 3120 stack so still learning at the moment.

Can anyone help or point us in the right diorection?

Thanks,

Z.

I have this problem too.

Rahul,

Thanks - on this connection I have at work I just see 4 scroll bars but on a BB link it has 4 scroll bars and the URL's. I had that very last URL but had been looking at the managing IOS and other system files section. I will have a look at the Managing Switch Stack section and see if it helps me for the next up and coming upgarde. Many thanks for your help and no idea why i didn't even see that.
