FR-C6FW is a software license that allows you to run the IOS firewall feature set on the 6500

WS-SVC-FWM-1-K9 is a hardware module that is inserted into one of the slots in a 6500 and provides firewalling services for the 6500. So it is a dedicated hardware firewall.

If you need high firewall throughput with little to no effect on the main 6500 CPU etc. then the FWSM is the way to go and is in fact the Cisco recommended solution for 6500 firewalling.

Thanks Jhon,

what means "License Separate"  in the P/N description (Firewall blade for 6500 and 7600, VFW License Separate)

The FWSM has the ability to run virtual firewalls ie. you can in effect run mutiple, separate virtual firewalls on the same physical module. These virtual firewalls are called contexts. When you purchase the FWSM you get 2 free contexts + the admin context so you can run 2 virtual firewalls. However if you need more virtual firewalls you can purchase additional licenses to allow you to run 10, 20 etc. contexts.
