Q: hsrp and standby group limitations?

Been trying to find information about this.

As I understand, with my SUP720 in the 6509, I can configure up to 256 unique hsrp group id's (standby group id).

With several vlan's configured, they can be configured with different hsrp group id, same hsrp group id or different hsrp group id with various numbers of vlan's in the different hsrp group id's.

But is the total number of vlan's configured with hsrp also 256?

Hello Sand-Strand,

by reusing the same HSRP group on multiple SVI interfaces you should be able to use HSRP on more then 256 Vlans

I recommend to use a different MD5 password on Vlans that share the same HSRP group-id.

The reason for this is that during broadcast storms or other network issues one SVI can receive HSRP hellos of another vlan and the devices will start to complain for the wrong/different IP address.

with different MD5 passwords each instance will ignore messages with same group-id but different authentication settings.

Hope to help

Giuseppe
