Interface Reporting Giant Frames

Hi,

We've configured some trunk interfaces to our VMWare ESX Host Servers NIC's. I've noticed the interace is reporting giants. No one has reported any problems but I just wondered why this might be happening? From my understanding the Server should add the vlan tag on to the frame which will increase its size from 1518 bytes to 1522 bytes. I thought when an interface is configured as trunk it takes this extra size in to consideratuion and therefore doesn't report the frame as a giant which is why i'm confused that it reporting this.

There are no input errors or output errors reported on the interfaces.

Any ideas much appreciated.

Many Thanks

Darren

Hi,

The giant packets will increase in the interface is becuase of mismatching MTU setting between your server to the switch interface.

generally the switch interface MTU will be 1500.if the interface is recieving greater MTU than configured MTU then Giant packets will genenrate on the interface.

Thanks

Samy
