On net/off net ring works automatically, but it can be quite subtle.
If a call comes from an off-net source (i.e. gateway) then you get a 'double' ring. If you get called from an internal extension you get a 'single' ring. It's not possible to have different ring tones for each as such. For some ring tones it's more obvious than others.
The distinctive ring list is a list of tones you can apply to secondary lines on your phone, it isn't affected by the on-net/off-net source of a call.
