Solved: Extended ping source IP address question

I was discussing the extended ping option with

a collegue of mine. we started discussing the "source Ip address or interface" line within the extended ping command set. He claimed that the source IP address or interface had to be configured on the router. I claimed that the source IP address could be any address that as within a valid range that any IP address configured on the router.

Can anyone please clarify this?

Hello,

The IP address you are using as the source should be the IP address on the

router. You cannot use a random IP in the subnet. If you go to a firewall

(PIX/ASA), there is an option for packet tracer where you can use any random

IP as the source.

You collegue is right.

Rack1R1#ping 150.1.2.2 sour 150.3.2.25

% Invalid source address- IP address not on any of our up interfaces
