VoIP Phone Setup

Hello everyone,

I am interested in switching from analog telephone to VoIP, and I have recently purchased a Cisco 7942G VoIP phone. I have a Cisco WAG310G modem with VoIP capability but it does not match because the VoIP socket on the modem is RJ-11 where the phone is RJ-45, so there is no way I could power up the phone without a power plug.

I am very new to this technology and would somebody please advice me how to set it up and get it working?

Hello, as strange as this may sound, that DSL modem/router/gateway you have only provides voip via FXS and FXO ports (analog connections) when used in conjunction with a service provider that provides you this feature.

If you are set on using you 7942 phone you will need to do at least 3 things:

1. Buy a power supply or POE switch to power it. http://www.google.com/products?q=4%20port%20poe

2. Find out if it has SIP firmware on it now and if not, research how to aquire and load it. http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/phones/ps379/products_tech_note09186a0080094584.shtml

3. Configure it to work with a SIP provider or build your own SIP gateway of some sort. http://www.google.com/search?q=sip+service+providers or http://www.google.com/search?q=asterisk

Hello Brandon,

I have checked online for POE switch and they are exceeding beyond my expectations (e.g. they have too many ports as only 2 - 4 users maximum will be using the ports, but I could not find any 4 ports POE switch.) I wonder if it would work by using some sort of POE adapters for powering up the phone and then connect to the VoIP modem I mentioned earlier on the post.

Do you think it will be a possible solution as I am trying to reduce the cost involved?

Just buy a cisco phone power adapter, aka "brick"

Like Paolo said, just buy a single power supply for one phone if you wish. they should be around $25USD on ebay, etc.

I found plenty of 4 port POE switches around $100USD when I searched for "4 port POE" on Google.
