I have to upgrade a switch so we can use AAA. They don't want me to bring the buildings network down to do this. Somone told me theres a download command or something that will allow me to install the new IOS without rebooting.
Anyone know how this is done?

Hello,
Once you upload the new image, you do need to reboot the switch for the new
IOS to take into effect. You can download the image, set the boot variables
and wait for a downtime and then reload the switch.

Hope this helps.

Hello,
Unfortunately, to use the new IOS, you do need to reboot the switch.

Hey, tell them the schould have multiple paths and redandant central switches.
Spanning tree helps minimising downtime if a link or switch breaks
or has to be updated (or fans replaced).
Or in the "big" switches, redundant Controllers so you can update the passive-one,
reboot the passive controller, switch control over from active to passive
and then update and reboot the now passive controller.
On the "normal" sized switches, you may download new software and
set up the boot parameters to use it and activate it by rebooting
at planned maintainence time.
But even real old Cisco-Switches have some kind of AAA;
and replacing an realy old IOS with a very new one may be a risk .
So what switch is it and what historical image is running?
(by the way, uptime ist also interesting. more than 10 Years ?)
Juergen.
