Anyone configured HWIC-3G-HSPA for UK (with Orange)

I'm looking to use HWIC-3G-HSPA as a backup for an ADSL circuit can't seem to get it working using Orange data sim.  It does seem to come up as the dialer interface does get assigned an IP address (which is RFC1918 but typical with GSM networks) but I can't seem to ping the IP or use it s a default gateway (traceroute / pings all faill).

Any sample configs our there - specifically for the HWIC-3G-HSPA on orange .

1. What profile to use

- APN = orangeinternet

- Type is IPv4 (not PPP)

- Auth = pap

- User = user

- Pass = pass

I have also seen APN=orangewap ; User=Orange; Pass=Multimedia

2. Also what chat script (

- Currently chat-script gsmscript "" "atdt*98*1#" TIMEOUT 20 "CONNECT" but have seen elsewhere *UK Linux portal where someone was using atdt*

3. Any idiot proof ways of

a) making sure that the sim card is indeed registered and working for use with HWIC (I believe it is different to a phone sim that has a data plan)

b) checking that it is connecting correctly (veriy APN, User / Pass )

c) checking that is it passing traffic (the TX/RX counters always seem to show 0 even though the dialer interface has been assigned IP address via DCHP ?

Thanks in advance for any help / ideas.

I have this problem too.
