DHCP Vs Static IP on DMM and DMP

Is there a real use for the dhcp ip adressing on DMM / DMPi was tald that i have to fix static IP on both DMM and DMP's then why a dhcp option if there is no use for it ?

Hi Raouf,

To my opinion the most important reason is that you need the DHCP because this is the initial configuration on the dmp.So, as soon as it boots up, the dmp will request for an ip address from a dhcp server. After receiving an ip address the Cisco logo will be displayed on the lcd with the ip address the dmp has received.

I am curious who mentioned to you to use Static IP for DMPs over DHCP?

The person or person(s) may have a good reason for mentioning to use

Static over Dynamic IP addressing.

Static to Dynamic IP addressing on the Cisco DMPs is determined on

a Case by Case basis. The ip addressing scheme will be determined

by you IP infrastructure and policies.

That said, (the following comments are related to DMS versions of 5.2.x)

The Digital Media Manager (DMM) and Show & Share (SnS) appliances

are different from the DMPs. The DMM & SnS use Static IP addresses and

require FQDN DNS names. This is a straight forward configuration

requirement.

On the DMPs, DHCP is enabled by default. You will also need access

to an IP network with DHCP for the initial configuration of the DMPs.

Once the DMP acquires a IP address from the DHCP server, A user

can record the IP address at bootup and then access the DMP via

the DMP-DM (Web Admin Gui) and configure Static IP addresses if

so desired.

So in summary, the DHCP option is needed since it is required for

initial configuration and with DHCP the DMPs are dynamic and can

move from one IP network to another is needed. In the end,

the IP addressing scheme is determined by you or your IT team.

Hi,
thank's for the answer,
in fact i'm aware of these points,

My question is more about the relevance of this option for both DMM and DMP setting.

In anyway we have to acces the settings to change several points later,
on the other hand, even when we install the DMM those points could be already fixed from the beginning at the first boot setting.

And so for the DMP, having an ip shown on the startup screen allows direct access directly connected to the DMP using the same IP range,
by this acess we can fixe any static ip for the DMP it self or centralizing to DMM.

Then my real question is, for the next release, is it necessairy to have the dhcp seting choice or not ... concidering that in any case we use static IP ?

Raouf,

What DMS version are you referencing for DMM?

AFAIK, DMM 5.2.x & later DHCP is not an option

anymore for DMM. And with 5.1 and earlier DHCP

was an option but not recommended.

As for the DMP (as i mentioned above), DHCP will always

be an option. DHCP is required to initially configure the DMP.

Maybe I am missing your question, so please let me know

if this does not answer your questions.
