ASA 5550 fiber interfaces are not detecting

Hi,

In ASA 5550 fiber interfaces are not detecting after connecting the SFP module. It has "maximum physical interfaces=unlimited". As per the show tech only 8 physcial interfaces are showing, 4 ports copper in slot 0 and 4 ports copper in slot 1. We have tried in all the methods by changing media type also, also checked in another similar kind of ASA model and found the same status.

Please let us know is there any extra command to intialize the module only to enable fibre interfaces.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

The ASA 5550 only has 8 physical ports (gigabit ports) plus a management port.

the 4GE-SSM allows you to use 4 ports and not 8. You can configure the 4GE-SSM to use RJ-45 or SFP but only 4 ports will be active.

The interface name will not change if you use SFP compared to RJ-45 since there are only 4 active ports available on the 4GE-SSM of the ASA5550.

ciscoasa# sh run int gi 1/0
!
interface GigabitEthernet1/0
media-type sfp
speed nonegotiate
nameif outside
security-level 0
ip address x.x.x.x 255.255.255.0

ciscoasa# sh int gi 1/0
Interface GigabitEthernet1/0 "outside", is up, line protocol is up
Hardware is VCS7380 rev01, BW 1000 Mbps, DLY 10 usec
    (Full-duplex), Nonegotiate-Speed(1000 Mbps)
Input flow control is unsupported, output flow control is unsupported
    Media-type configured as SFP connector

I hope this helps!

Hi,

Thanks for your response. We have connected SFP module (GLC-SX-MM) to gi 1/0 in the fibre slot and changed the media type to sfp. Connected the fibre cable to the interface from the swtich to ASA, but no luck.  At the switch interface status showing as "amber".

Thanks,

Ram

Ram - it's possible you have a defective SFP interface or bad SFP port on your ASA, have you tested it in a link on another switch?
