There area couple of things to consider:
1) As you've noted - contacts don't have all attributes; so you need to use an attribute they have in order to sync them in. This may not be a simple switch in a a production network
2) The CCM LDAP Filter by default doesn't include contacts; in older versions you had to edit this in the DB directly, but in CCM8 you can do this from the System/LDAP/LDAP Filter menu. Take a look at this post for an example filter: https://supportforums.cisco.com/message/3042759#3042759
