When VoIP Vlan meets the Distribution Layer

Here's a quick question thats been bothering me.

What happens when the VoIP valn meets the Distribution layer and needs to access switches that are in a different switch block in a different part of the campus? The CCNP book strongly advises that vlans do not cross Distribution layers switches into the core.

More sleepless nights methinks 0-)

Hi

Voice VLANs are nothing different to any other access VLAN (barring the fact that it is presented as dot1q trunked at the edge port rather than as untagged traffic).

As such, if your other access VLANs are large L2 domains crossing switch blocks, the VVLANs probably will be as well.

Best practice for both is not to do that, so if (for example) you have a routed distribution layer and unique access VLANs per edge switch block, then you would mirror that configuration with your VVLANs.

Regards
