I have two Catalyst 6513 and i need to install in both equipment a Module CEF720 with 4 port 10-Gigabit ethernet.

When I install the first module in one of  the 6513 (named switch_a) everithing it´s ok, but in the second 6513 (named switch_b) the module don´t start. I change the module that works in switch_a and install it in switch_b and don´t works too.

If I look the log in the switch_b it exist a warning:

%C6KPWR-SP-4-UNSUPPORTED: unsupported module in slot 11, power not allowed: Unsupported baseboard/earl combination.

The version of the IOS in the device that works is:

IOS (tm) s72033_rp Software (s72033_rp-IPSERVICESK9_WAN-M), Version 12.2(18)SXF5, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc3)

And the IOS in the device with problems:

IOS (tm) s72033_rp Software (s72033_rp-IPSERVICESK9_WAN-M), Version 12.2(18)SXF16, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc2)

In switch_b a show module command shown:

Take a look at the SXF release notes:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst6500/ios/12.2SXF/native//release/notes/hardware.html#wp3051670

The DFC3C and DFC3CXL is only supported on the 6708-10GE line card.  You will need to upgrade to SXH.  Even though it "turns on" in SXF5 it's not supported by Cisco, and if you have any issues and call the TAC, they will ask you to upgrade.  In SXF5 the card would power up, but it was not supported or tested, so to reduce confusion, it was set to power off in later versions of SXF.

Can you post output of "sh module" from switch A.

It looks like you have a PFC/DFC incompatability issue in switch ie. your PFC is 3B and your module has DFC 3C.

Jon

Thanks for your interest, The show module of switch_a is the following:

Regards,

Thanks. Okay you have same sup in switch A so maybe not. Can you post the output of this command from both switches -

show platform hardware pfc mode

Jon

Hi,

Please check CSCsk12525.

You need to either change the hardware combination or change the software.

HTH,

Lei Tian

Lei Than:

Thanks for your answer, but I have a doubt , in the article that you comment (CSCsk12525) tells that the solution of this caveats is upgrade to a version 12.2(18)SXF11, In the switch with the problem the version is 12.2(18)SXF16 and the switch of normal behavior the version is 12.2(18)SXF5, then it´s all different than expected.

I don´t want do a downgrade to a 12.2(18)SXF5 without know it´s the solution.

Regards,

Hi,

The BUG says before SXF11, 67XX line card with DFC3C may work with PFC3B, but it is not supported combination. This unexpected behavior is fixed in SXF11, so line card with DFC3C cann't be power up in 6500 with PFC3B.

Also I would not recommend downgrade the code to SXF5. If you want change the code, I would recommend you goto 12.2(33)SXH or later code, which has official support for this combination.

HTH,

Lei Tian

Here is the result of command show platform hardware pfc mode:

PFC operating mode : PFC3B

Thanks.
